Why is computer security important?

Computer security refers to a set of measures that you can take to protect your computer, and all of the information on it, from theft, vandalism, or any type of invasion of privacy. Think about all of the tasks you do on your computer; do you access online banking? When you shop online, do you have your credit card information saved so it automatically fills it in for you? Making sure you are protecting your computer, and therefore all of your most private information, is crucial as we continue living our lives online. All of us can be victims of cybercrime, and it’s important to take steps to protect ourselves.

How can I protect my virtual information?

Protecting your computer can start simple. First, you want to make sure you have a password for each user on your computer. Also, it’s a good idea to use a variety of unique, strong passwords for all of your logins. There are password management systems that can help you do this without having to memorize each password for each site. Another simple tip is to install anti-virus/anti-malware software on your computer and phone, making sure it’s a reputable application. It’s always a good idea to do a quick google search before downloading anything of which you aren’t familiar. Do you have your apps on auto update? If not, it might be a good idea to do that, since updates can often include a better security system. Another important suggestion is to make sure you have some sort of backup system in case something does happen.
